Quote and Poem of the Day: February 3, 2014

have you ever heard someone say something
in just the most-perfect and precise way
    that clearly conveys
what you’ve always wanted to say?

remember that feeling when you no longer felt alone?

remember when you felt that sense of relief in knowing,
    “whew, it’s not just me”?
you had an immediate sense of belonging,
a sense of connectedness, of community.

but what if that they had kept their lips sealed
    for fear of speaking up?

what if they chose to not express themselves
for fear of stepping into the unknown?
for fear of being exposed and vulnerable,
for being out there all on their own?

    what happens when an artist
    crumples up their truth,
    and simply tosses it aside?

the possibility for mattering to someone, vanished.
the chance for inciting change, banished.

manifest and materialize what’s silent inside.
inject your creations with the unfiltered essence of you,
with the spirit of what you hold dear,
for it will bring others closer and near.

    don’t shush your inner voice,
    it’s who you really are.

be inarguably authentic and genuine, honest and real.
    be unmistakably brazen and courageous,
reveal what it is that makes you remarkable.

    get unstuck
    discover new possibilities
    see new perspectives
    go off tangent
    wander for a bit
    meander, mentally
    take a break
let your mind unravel and relax
    give yourself headspace to roam
to play, to breathe new life
into those things that perplex, puzzle and stress
    take a different route
    you might just find
    a much better way home

Quote and Poem of the Day: January 29, 2014

    we’re all a little broken.
    we’re all somewhat bent,
    we’ve all had heartbreak,
    and endured great torment.
    we’ve all suffered loss
    and have hurt deep inside,
    we’re all somehow scarred
and often want to curl up and hide.
    unforeseen events have shaken us,
and have thrown us far off track.
and more than we want to admit,
we’ve often even feared for our lives.

so, this i say to all the artists,
(which is us each and all),
    whatever it is you create,
speak the truth that is a part of you.

    share the essence and emotions
of the stories that are uniquely you.
your experience is unlike any other,
but it is relatable all the same.

    be raw.
reveal the sting of the defeats that have defined you.
    expose the strength you’ve needed
for all the struggles you’ve endured.
pull back the curtain to your most vulnerable self,
give us a peak of the bleeding bruise inside.

    draw us close.
hold us near to your heart.
we want to taste your triumphs
(as if they are our own).

we want to feel the joy of overcoming,
the ecstasy, the overwhelming sense of achievement
from rising up, despite and against all odds.

    wax ecstatic.
communicate that which can’t be said,
    but can only be expressed.

create art that is a reflection of your soul.
and we will see ourselves there alongside you.

    in doing so we see,
    you are not unlike us.
    we will cheer you on,
    we will know
we are one in the same.

    this is what connects us.
this is what unites and binds us.
    this what makes us stronger,
    because together, we become whole.

    we’re not in this alone.

how we live our lives is our poetry.
share your poems with the world
    with each breath, note, word
and stroke you bring into being.

Quote and Poem of the Day: January 28, 2013

    awe and wonder,
    curiosity and intrigue!
these are the innately human feelings
that continually excite and compel me.

sadly, many seem to live their lives
    devoid of such elusive emotions
    that illicit such eternal bliss.
our culture is devoted to complacently,
encouraging us to accept all that is told,
to believe that nothing is deeper
than the sheen of the glossy veneer
    that’s painted on the surface
    from the pop culture brigade
    of our mass media mediocrity.

    open yourself to illumination,
for inquisitive minds are never bored!

    become fascinated.
    consume yourself no more
with the banal and trivial thoughts
that betray your natural, inquisitive state.

    accept no pretence.
    lift each and every mask.
    seek to reveal what’s hidden,
the truth that lies dormant underneath
    (secret worlds await).

    we are born to wonder!
take a trip and get lost in mental explorations.
let your inward eye find fascination
in the otherwise overlooked and obvious.

never lose your sense of wonder,
for the future belongs to the curious.

    fascinate!

Episode 500 of The DIY Daily Podcast!

it’s fitting that persistency is my word of the day, because as i sit here this monday morning, i’ve somehow managed to record 500 episodes of a spontaneous little idea i had one evening for a solo podcast i envisioned.

every single episode, unscripted and recorded in the moment, published to the world mere minutes later.

sure, the show could be more produced, but my endeavour has always been to simply share what i was learning, every day, as it happened, raw, unedited and unfiltered.

so thank you for listening. thank you for continuing to press play and for being open to my quest for change, for my zen thinking pontifications, my morning rambles, and my daily poems. thank you for your words of encouragement and inspiration.

thank you for sharing, for donating, and for all the positive vibes you continually bounce back to me.

so, where to from here? well, i’ve got a few ideas. change is in the air, indeed... and its scent is rapturous, inciting and exciting. stay tuned...

much love, and cheers to all of your personal, artistic and creative endeavours!

Quote and Poem of the Day: January 27, 2013

there’s something so soothing and calming
    in knowing that unrelenting consistency,
    that continual repeated effort,
will always wear away forces that oppose.

    persistent reproach
    silences the nagging nay-sayers,
    both inside and out,
    through proof of action.

    in this i know
    that with each passing day
    i can only become stronger
despite any initial lack of ability, aptitude or skill
(but only if i don’t falter or relent).

    focussed and invested time,
    tenacious unflinching regard,
    a continuous endeavour to improve,
to create, to fail, to laugh, and happily try all over again,
this is the only path to mastery
which has now, and ever, truly been.

    experience trumps all.

    it bridges the divide
    between talent and opportunity,
it builds roads of favourable fortune
(which some might mistake for luck),
    where before there were none.

    persistency.
    it’s a habit, a trait,
(perhaps most sensual and intimate of all).

it compels me to pay attention.
it hints at deep-rooted, underlying passions
which no matter what, can never be led astray.

    the tenacity of the stubborn,
on a mission from the creative muse,
points to something so genuine and authentic,
so mystical and honest and real,
    that it remains untainted,
    by the compromised taste
    of the twisted conformist tongue.

when you know the nature of your heart
and you hear it’s lost and forlorn call,
answer it with continual action and effort,
    reply with proof of intent.

Quote and Poem of the Day: January 24, 2013

can you remember who you were
before the world told you who you should be?

    can you recall
those childhood days of wonder and awe
    that captured and enraptured
    your days of yore,
    and those feelings you had
before you thought you knew it all?

    when you reflect
on those carefree days of youth,
    do you remember
    how everything seemed so possible?
how your wildest hopes and dreams
were all within certain and attainable grasp?

    race car driver, astronaut!
    musician, author, artist, explorer!
    all tangible possibilities
    you could not only foresee,
    but could actually taste.

you create the weight of the world
    with which you burden yourself.
it’s you who attaches an anchor to your dreams
when you strive to please and appease others
rather than giving flight to your fantasies,
unencumbered by what others might think.

lift your dreams like a helium balloon,
take them towards the limitless sky.
    awaken yourself!

    know this:

who you once were, still remains.

invite childlike wonder into your life once again.
    renew yourself.
    revitalize and refresh your approach.
    see the world anew!
find the spark that once started it all.
    its ember still glows,
it craves your breath of life.
fan the flames to your fantasies.
let go of all that’s holding you back.

Quote and Poem of the Day: January 23, 2014

    don’t pre-judge your day,
tempting fate, before it’s yet begun
(saying, "aww man, today’s gonna’ suck!”).

    don’t wish away the wonder
of what’s already here before you, now
(saying, “i sure hope this week better flies by fast!”).

don’t miss the awe of each moment,
being lost in ruminating, poisonous and self-possessed thought,
    dwelling on what's already passed,
    and is now forever gone.

your past is just a story you tell yourself,
don’t let it spoil and ruin today!

today brings you nothing but chances, opportunities, learnings, compassion, wisdom, wonder, surprises,
and the luxury of living and loving in the overflowing, always changing present.

    open yourself to possibility,
to witness the perfection of every passing moment.

    give yourself the space
    to become unencumbered,
to find the remarkable in the fleeting,
to revel in the transient passings,
    the happy happenstance happenings
of our forever ticking and rolling, unfolding time.

allow your day to exceed all expectations.
give your day a chance to be all that it already is!

    your perceptions colour your reality.
with which brush will you paint your canvas today?

tilt your head to the sky,
let the sun shine on your face.
let the rain fall upon your brow.
let the breeze rustle your hair...

smile, this is the best day of your life!
