Quote and Poem of the Day: February 11, 2014

when someone asks, "how’s it going, eh?”
    is your first thought,
    “i’m so busy, i’m stressed!”

do small things set you off,
    sending you spiralling
into a frantic and out-of-control tizzy?

    do you see disasters
looming around each and every bend?

    are you consumed and overwhelmed
by the many pending tasks and deadlines
which seem to require your attention post-haste?

    well my friend,
i’d say you’ve gone and frayed your nerves
    and let yourself become undone.

we oft try to do too many things at once.
we try to change the world in just one day.
we like to think our multi-task abilities are exemplary!
and so we just go and pile even more on.

    yet all we oft achieve,
is a pile of half-assed mediocrity,
with nothing ever being done to its best.

in the wake of our busied distractions,
we leave behind our focussed intent,
    the foremost necessary ingredient
to creating works of remarkable wonder,
creative and personal, and in both love and work too.

before you lose your mind over menial trivialities,
    ask yourself:
"will this matter a year from now?"

is this worth losing my equanimity
which will then poison my purpose for the rest of my day?

    pause.
    breathe before you react.
    calm your mind.

    in stillness, peace appears.
it’s here where we find the focus
to do the work that truly matters,
unfettered by a messy and unkept,
    fragile and breakable mind.

Quote and Poem of the Day: February 7, 2014

find the blessing in your experiences.
find the wisdom that hides within your past.
    indeed, it’s bloody-hard tough,
but we must learn to be grateful
for all our bloody noses and bumps and bruises
which we’ve all been forced to endure.

    find the truth behind
what each and every moment has brought you.

peace and happiness is found through understanding,
not in judging, not in resisting,
    not in agitated confrontation,
    but in knowing.

we all work with the limited tools we have.
have compassion for the you from yesterday.
    be gracious with your pain!

know, that all your past misguided attempts and failures are now your aids.
cradle them at your side, as you would any other weapon of personal defence.
ward off the negative, soul-sucking cronies of what dwelling and ruminating brings.

know, that all of your past suffering
    and all of those uncontrollable,
    accidental crises and mishaps
    (whether deserved or not),
    can be reshaped to illuminate
the true beauty, fullness and potential of life within.

find the blessing in all your experiences.
    use them to your advantage.
    make the most of them,
and you’l have much to gain.

Quote and Poem of the Day: February 6, 2014

the things you are passionate about are not random, they are your calling.

these are the things that through you
your soul can finally find its voice,
letting it speak the things it cannot say.

dive full-heartedly into all that you cannot clear from your mind.

what pursuits have stuck with you
    throughout much of your life?
what things would you even do for free,
    because you you have to,
because your sanity and life depend on it?

what childhood dreams still tickle your mind and imagination,
making you sigh and say, “hmm, what if… maybe someday?"

wherever you find your most intense passions,
here is where you will find your most honest and authentic
energy, commitment, focus, and willingness to do the work.
all without worry or concern for “results”,
which plague all other of our attempts.

lose yourself in the love of the craft for that which your heart can’t let go.

    purity of purpose and intent.
here is where you're able to create
free and fresh and with exuberance,
which only true passion can bring.

this is the genesis of enduring and endearing works of artistic quality.
unfettered, untarnished, uncompromised by commoditization, monetization or materialistic rewards.

Quote and Poem of the Day: February 5, 2014

when you toss and turn and toil
when you bang your head in frustration
with repeated genuine and authentic attempts,
and despite all the hard work you do,
    when you continually pontificate
and find no solution seemingly in sight,
    this is the creative heartache
of you body, mind and soul
    burning their excess mental fat,
exercising away their preconceived, constricting demons,
cleaning away their clutter that obfuscates the clarity,
of the epiphany and resolution which you ultimately seek.

    know, that this takes time.
know, that you’re doing the work.
know, that with each twist and turn,
you are untying that complicated and contorted, mystifying knot.

    you're closer than you think.

    focus, patience, determination,
and a loyalty to your purpose and intent,
are the steadfast tools always at your side.
    use them, employ them,
and your struggle will be a prelude to your success.

Quote and Poem of the Day: February 4, 2014

denial is the beginning of the end.

if you constantly talk about it
yet take no steps to achieve it,
    then this is a warning
of a dream about to die.

    refusing to admit
what deep down you already know
(i should really be working more at this)
    predicts the dream
of which you will inevitably let go.

    there are no scapegoats.
no one cares about this more than you.
    you shoulder the responsibility
to act on the hunch you have.

    don’t tempt fate
    by refusing to listen
to your own wise, internal voice.

    it knows.

    underachievers never realize
    the impact of their procrastinations.

what’s the worst that could happen?

    dreams die
    when they’re oft spoke of,
but not built into being by determined action.

    confront your hunches of failure.
send them weeping and squealing into the hills
with commitment, consistent effort and ferocious intent.

Quote and Poem of the Day: February 3, 2014

have you ever heard someone say something
in just the most-perfect and precise way
    that clearly conveys
what you’ve always wanted to say?

remember that feeling when you no longer felt alone?

remember when you felt that sense of relief in knowing,
    “whew, it’s not just me”?
you had an immediate sense of belonging,
a sense of connectedness, of community.

but what if that they had kept their lips sealed
    for fear of speaking up?

what if they chose to not express themselves
for fear of stepping into the unknown?
for fear of being exposed and vulnerable,
for being out there all on their own?

    what happens when an artist
    crumples up their truth,
    and simply tosses it aside?

the possibility for mattering to someone, vanished.
the chance for inciting change, banished.

manifest and materialize what’s silent inside.
inject your creations with the unfiltered essence of you,
with the spirit of what you hold dear,
for it will bring others closer and near.

    don’t shush your inner voice,
    it’s who you really are.

be inarguably authentic and genuine, honest and real.
    be unmistakably brazen and courageous,
reveal what it is that makes you remarkable.

Quote and Poem of the Day: January 31, 2014

    get unstuck
    discover new possibilities
    see new perspectives
    go off tangent
    wander for a bit
    meander, mentally
    take a break
let your mind unravel and relax
    give yourself headspace to roam
to play, to breathe new life
into those things that perplex, puzzle and stress
    take a different route
    you might just find
    a much better way home
